Interview: Paddy Considine, The Suspicions Of Mr Whicher

Paddy Considine is one of my favourite actors, hands down. Ever since I saw Dead Man’s Shoes – possibly the darkest film I’ve seen – I was sold on him. Some have called him the British De Niro and I can see the sense in that. Considine is an expert at portraying that inner rage, always simmering away in the background. When it does come out it tends to explode in a terrible, dark torrent of violence. For The Suspicions Of Mr Whicher – the story of the Victorian detective based on the novels by Kate Summerscale – Considine has to rein in the darkness. Even though he’s a dour man, there’s a deep sorrow underpinning his every breath rather than the violence some of other characters displayed in the past. Chasing-Shadows-2Reece Shearsmith – an excellent writer and character actor best known for his work with The League of Gentlemen team – has branched out into crime drama recently. In The Widower he played true-life serial killer Malcolm Webster and did a good job. Here, in this new four-part procedural, he plays DS Sean Stone – a pained expert in serial killers who has been shunted to the Missing Person’s Bureau. Continue reading

Matthew McConaughey lampoons his True Detective character in new car advert

At the heart of this devotion was the performances of subsequent Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but my devotion wasn’t matched by everyone.
