Last year Fargo was one of the very best crime dramas, mixing as it did black humour with gruesomeness perfectly. Now it’s back for a second run this week, with a new cast (Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson, Jesse Plemons, Ted Danson et al) and a new story, albeit that’s linked to the first series. There’s plenty of other good stuff on this week (including the start of the secoind series of Rectify), so let’s dig in…

The what-now? Yes, it’s series two of the masterful crime drama with flourishes of delicious black comedy. The action is this time set in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Luverne, Minnesota, 30 years before the events of the first season. It is 1979 and an unexpected turn of events at a local diner disrupts the lives of the citizens of a small Minnesota town, including state police officer Lou Solverson, his father-in-law Sheriff Hank Larsson, beautician Peggy Blomquist and her husband Ed.

River’s mental fragility is further strained when he begins to suspect the man he chased to his death was innocent. He finds himself pursued by the victim’s girlfriend, who realises he is an unexpected ally.

Cassie and Sunny dig deeper into the lives of two of the people mentioned in the diary. They begin with Father Robert Greaves, who remembers Jimmy fondly, but is unable to help identify the mysterious `Jo-Jo’, the person who it appears gave Jimmy the journal. The detectives also meet Eric Slater, the former bookkeeper to Arlingham House. He also remembers the victim well – but can he provide any clues to his disappearance?

A college dean is found bludgeoned to death in local woodland, following a heated pub debate. When an alchemic image is discovered by the body, denoting the first of four stages of a process called `The Magnum Opus’, the detectives realise that there are three more murders to follow. Before any more crimes are committed, the team must uncover the guilty secret that the victims share in order to learn the identity of the killer and the potential victims.

A new code exploits a printer’s design flaw, allowing cyber-arsonists to set fires remotely by using wi-fi data connections, and Brody gets a blast from the past when he discovers the person responsible. Meanwhile, Elijah has personal problems when his ex-wife decides to move to San Diego with their daughter.
