Ever since it was announced that there was going to be a Victorian-themed one-off episode, there has been much speculation about Sherlock during the past few months. Fans wondered whether it was the previously modern series in fancy dress, but showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss confirmed that the special – to air before series four – was indeed a story set in the original-era because, well, why not? The only thing that was left to confirm was when this was going to air. Christmas looked likely, but now we have the details.
It was the MCM Comic-Con in London this weekend and part of it was a Sherlock panel, comprising Moffat, Gatiss, Sure Vertue and Amanda Abbington.
They confirmed that the special – called The Abominable Bride – will air in the UK (on BBC1) and in the US (on PBS) on 1st January. Not only that, but the episode will be show in selected cinemas across the UK.
The only thing left to discuss was when series four would follow, and the panel said that shooting will start next spring. My guess is that series four – three, feature-length episodes – will air at Christmas.
Anyway, here are some of the tweets from the live Q&A:
