By now we’re fully locked into a rapid one-a-night crime drama sequence. With the return of Shetland – starring Douglas Henshall and based on the book by Anne Cleeves – we now have brand new crime drama every single night of the week, and that’s not even mentioning the stuff on Walter Presents. At least the weather makes you want to stay in and watch TV!

  1. Shetland *NEW UK PREMIERE SERIES*
    Friday 15th January, 9pm, BBC1
    Douglas Henshall returns as Jimmy Perez in this wind-swept crime drama. A passenger on the Aberdeen to Shetland ferry witnesses an altercation between two men, one of whom subsequently goes missing, while a young boy is admitted to intensive care after consuming pills he mistook for sweets found on the beach. DI Jimmy Perez searches the shoreline and recovers a rucksack containing more pills and a ferry ticket – which a hooded figure tries to snatch from him. Now a connected missing persons and drugs case, matters gather pace after a body is found in grisly circumstances. Ciaran Hinds appears in a guest role.

2. Endeavour *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
Sunday 17th January, 8pm, ITV
Morse investigates the disappearance of a Dutch au pair, which seems connected to rivalry amid the city’s academics. His search leads him to a family estate in the Oxfordshire countryside where he meets three siblings divided by personal demons and shared loss. Endeavour suspects there is a link between the disappearance and an unsolved case from years before, but as the investigation continues, conflict erupts between his fellow officers. When a group of teenagers makes a horrifying discovery, he suspects someone is manipulating events from afar.

3. 100 Code *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
Wednesday 13th January, 10pm, Sky Atlantic
Conley dedicates every waking hour to keeping the killer from finding his victims, and with the help of Eklund’s team of officers, he shadows the two main suspects; a professor and a dentist, who have both been in New York and Stockholm during the murders.

4. Silent Witness *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th January, 9pm, BBC1
The murder of Amir Aziz, a prominent anti-fundamentalist Muslim, drags the Lyell team into the murky world of hate-crime and counter-terrorism. Initially thought to be the work of a EDL member whose son was killed by the Taliban, the team begin to suspect the killing is connected to Sarah Begovic, a young woman who left the UK to relocate to Syria, but who recently returned home in secret with her six-month-old son.

5. The Young Montalbano *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
Saturday 16th January, 9pm, BBC4
The Sicilian detective is called in to investigate the death of a man on board a Vigata fishing boat. However, as his inquiry proceeds, it becomes clear that what seemed to be an accidental fatality has far-reaching connections to more insidious criminal activity. Meanwhile, Montalbano discovers young policeman Fazio has been protecting a local family from death threats during his spare time, and as the wedding plans continue at pace, Livia and Salvo’s relationship seems to have run into trouble.

6. Midsomer Murders *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
Wednesday 13th January, 8pm, ITV
Forest ranger Felicity Ford is blinded by mysterious lights while driving at night in the village of Cooper Hill and the next morning her car is found abandoned at the roadside, followed closely by the discovery of her body. Visiting UFO spotters in the village are convinced aliens are responsible, but as Barnaby and Nelson try to get to the truth, they unearth suspicions, betrayals and long-buried secrets along the way.

7. Death In Paradise *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
Thursday 14th January, 9pm, BBC1
The island is rocked when Saint Marie’s governor Caroline Bamber drops dead at her leaving party, with the commissioner standing right next to her. As DI Goodman and the team try to deduce how she could have been poisoned without their boss noticing any foul play, they find themselves entering the murky world of island politics, where blackmail, threats and corruption seem commonplace – fuelled by ongoing tension between the French and British. Meanwhile, Humphrey braves the world of online dating, under the guidance of ladies’ man Dwayne – and soon finds his perfect match.

8. Gotham *NEW UK PREMIERE SERIES*
Monday 11th January, 10pm, Channel 5
Oswald Cobblepot styles himself the new King of Gotham after taking Fish Mooney’s place, and immediately flexes his new muscle by having one of his henchmen kill a rival mob boss. Meanwhile, Jim Gordon has been demoted to beat cop, while his ex-girlfriend Barbara is locked up in Arkham Asylum and his erstwhile partner Bullock has quit to become a bartender, and the former detective is so tense that he attacks a fellow cop, making Commissioner Loeb threaten to fire him too.

9. Castle *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
Tuesday 12th January, 9pm, Alibi
After receiving a mysterious tip from someone from her past, Beckett is launched into a fight for her life with a team of mercenaries hot on her trail. While Castle investigates why his wife is on the run, Beckett must figure out who wants her dead before they can finish the job.

10. Fortitude
Thursday 14th January, 9pm, Sky Atlantic
Another chance to see this Iceland-based supernatural/crime drama. The isolated community of Fortitude in the Arctic Circle has never been the scene of a violent crime, so news of a murder rocks the residents. Sheriff Dan Anderssen investigates alongside newly arrived British detective Eugene Morton, while the killing is a disaster for Governor Hildur Odegard’s plans to market Fortitude as an upmarket tourist destination.
