The 10 Best Crime Dramas This Week (Monday 25th – Sunday 31st January)


Dark_RoadThere’s so much new crime drama on at the moment, it’s difficult to know where to start with things. Unfortunately, not all of the new crime drama is that good so viewer discretion is advised. However, two shows that you know that will deliver the goods are Vera and Murdoch Mysteries – both returning this week. Hurrah!

She’s back! A body is discovered on the Northumberland moors, and identified as a woman who made a distressed 999 call on the night of her death – suggesting she may have been abducted by someone she knew. Vera takes on the case, and discovers the victim was a controversial figure in her home town, who had a complicated relationship with her family and a number of well-hidden secrets.
Sunday 31st January, 8pm, ITV

2. Murdoch Mysteries *NEW UK PREMIERE SERIES*
Canada’s version of Sherlock Holmes returns in the new ninth series. While Crabtree serves time for the murder of his sweetheart’s husband, Murdoch investigates the stabbing of an inmate that may be connected to the case.
Monday 25th January, 9pm, Alibi

Part one of a new story. The accidental fatal shooting of a Polish teenager in an armed police operation sparks a series of murders, which links Turkish gangsters, a grieving family and a fractured firearms unit. As the inquest delivers a lawful killings verdict, IPCC investigator Vicky Sharpe calls on the Lyell team to investigate the connection between the events and review the police evidence, but Sharpe’s relationship with the family of the teenager and her suspicion of the firearms division lead Nikki and Thomas to distrust her motives.

4. Midsomer Murders *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
An international cycling competition comes to the Midsomer village of Burwood Mantle, but when the race leader is murdered, DCI Barnaby and DS Nelson must investigate. During the race’s finale, the victim overtook his team-mate to win, leaving the team owner annoyed that he disobeyed his orders, and the rival manager disappointed that his team lost. However, as the pair look into the case, they find themselves drawn into a competitive world of blackmail, bribery and bloodshed, where winning comes at any cost.
Wednesday 27th January, 8pm, ITV

Conley and Eklund discover a lead to a suspect on the Dark Web – someone using the initials `LH’. Crime drama, in which a New York detective teams up with a Swedish cop to investigate a series of murders.

6. The Young Montalbano *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
Salvo requests a transfer to Genoa to be closer to Livia, but it is clear from his demeanour he is reluctant to leave his beloved Sicily. However, all thoughts of relocating are put from his mind when a Milanese barmaid living in Vigata disappears. Rumours abound about her excessive promiscuity, and people begin to jump to sordid conclusions. Montalbano balances this case with another involving a spate of unusual burglaries, in which the victims report the theft of bafflingly small amounts of money.
Saturday 30th January, 9pm, BBC4

Watson takes issue when her stepfather pens a novel based on her adventures with Sherlock. The duo also investigate a retired FBI agent’s murder.

8. Stan Lee’s Lucky Man *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
Harry and Suri embark on a dangerous hunt for the man they believe is behind the murder of London casino boss Freddy Lau. Harry is astounded when he proves the power of the bracelet both at the dog track and against a street magician, but dark forces appear to be closing in on him as Eve reappears with a dire warning and a mysterious man shows up at his wife and daughter’s house. Meanwhile, DS Winter receives a tip-off about Harry’s huge gambling debts and confronts him about his possible part in Lau’s death.

9. Death In Paradise *NEW UK PREMIERE EPISODE*
Dwayne attends the funeral of local barber Cedrik Verga and shortly after is puzzled to receive a message from beyond the grave – a text from the deceased claiming `I was murdered’. Given that his phone was in the coffin, is this a sick prank or something altogether more sinister? Humphrey agrees to investigate, and they soon find evidence to rule out his death from natural causes. Meanwhile, Humphrey demonstrates his culinary skills to Florence and the rest of the team.
Thursday 28th January, 9pm, BBC1

Seeking revenge for the death of Captain Essen, Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock are on the hunt for crazed killer Jerome, Gordon’s ex-girlfriend Barbara, and anyone who helped them. Meanwhile, the young Bruce Wayne and Alfred attend a charity gala at the local children’s hospital, but it results in a hostage situation.
