Season six of Spiral to start shooting in Paris next month

8049851-low_res-spiralThanks to Spiral and Witnesses (and a whole bunch of stuff on Walter Presents), France is now up there as one of the key and most prolific producers of tight, grimy, edgy urban procedurals. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say that the country’s output now rivals Scandinavia and the Nordic countries in terms of quality of output. If there’s one series that helped to kick off this interest in French crime drama it’s Spiral, and the good news is that the sixth series is on its way.

According to the French edition of Premiere, host broadcaster Canal+ is following its a biennial schedule for Spiral (or Engrenages in its native language), which means that after a year off 2016 means that it’s time to ramp up the Spiral activity.

All we know at this stage is that series six will once again be directed by Frédéric Jardin (Braquo, Spiral series five) and will bring back Caroline Proust as Captain Laure Berthaud, a woman who went through such extraordinary physical and mental ordeal in the last series we’d forgive Proust if she wanted to have a longer break.

The series will start shooting in early May in paris and, we’re told, will focus on corruption ‘judicial, police and personal’. I’m expecting to air in France later this year and then on BBC4 early next year. Twenty-seventeen is already shaping up to be quite a year.

More news as we get it.

  1. So happy to see the series continue, though it is bound to be a long wait before we can get the DVD of the sixth series. Despite the added burden of reading, which amalgamates in the mind and all but disappears (at one stage I turned up the sound in order to better “hear” the subtitles) it is a riveting earthy, challenging and entirely credible drama.

The characters, for all their flaws, become so familiar and so real, they occupied moments in the “real time” of our daily lives. Wendy and I discovered the series only in September/October of 2016, so were in the fortunate position of watching back to back episodes. We found that we were unable to watch more than two episodes a night – not only to spread the enjoyment and experience, but because the level of tension is so skilfully finessed that viewing more than two at a time was more than we could take.

As Australians who lived in England and Italy for seven years and made many trips to France – our interest in re-visiting France and particularly Paris was rekindled… Encore!

  2. My wife and I were recommended to the Spiral series by my brother and were extremely impressed that our National SBS channel had all 5 series available on their SBS on Demand facility which then created a daily segment of watching an episode (or 2) mandatory.
The quality of story, setting and particularly acting is second to none. Please let there be many more.
