It’s always fun to speculate how a new series or movie will take shape, and in the case of Twin Peaks – that cultiest of cult shows – the rumour machine is just starting to crank into gear. At the end of it all I think someone should write something about the whole process of bringing back Twin Peaks to the small screen, because it has been a rollercoaster ride. But it is definitely happening and now we have our first idea of what the story might be. Or not, as the case may be.
We’ve been wondering what story this new series of Twin Peaks will follow. Would there be unsolved Laura Palmer shenanigans to get stuck into? Would the story focus on the search for the missing Agent Dale Cooper?
The excellent site i09 carried a story that delved into co-creator Mark Frost’s upcoming novel, The Secret History of Twin Peaks, an exploration of the town’s mysteries. It hoped that it would give a steer as to what the new Twin Peaks might contain. Read on, but only if you don’t mind potential spoilers.
Twenty-five years [after Dale Cooper’s investigation of the murder of Laura Palmer,] the FBI gets a hold of a box from an anonymous source. In the box, a huge dossier…
A female FBI agent is tasked to analyze all the documents inside, and everything related to the strange town of Twin Peaks. She also has to determine the identity of the person who compiled the dossier. Along the way, she discovers secrets about the lives of the town’s residents, but also investigative reports from Dale Cooper who has since vanished, newspaper clippings, an autopsy report, and other classified information.
What happened since the disappearance (?) of the young woman? And why did an anonymous “archivist” compile such a thorough dossier on Twin Peaks and its origins?
Frost’s book, out in October, is a precursor the new series, scheduled for next year, so this kind of detail from an official source is not to be sniffed at. The description gives hints, but also keeps us in the dark. As you’d expect from any Lynch/Twin Peaks project.
