The 10 Best Crime Dramas This Week (Monday 4th – Sunday 10th July)

It’s all solid but unspectacular procedurals, and nothing too meaty. However, the odd series is still well worth a watch –  Rectify is great, and so is Justified. The latter, set in Kentucky, is as grimy as they come and well worth a watch, even though Channel 5 and its affiliate channels continue to muck about with the scheduling.

Series six. Fate’s Right Hand Raylan guides Ava through the process of informing on Boyd and also tries to turn the criminal’s friend Dewey Crowe against him. Meanwhile, Boyd attempts to pull off a daring heist right under the US Marshal’s nose.
Thursday 7th July, 11pm, Spike TV

The day after she goes on a date with village vet and local heart-throb Paul Bladon, Agatha gets a shock when he is killed by a fatal dose of horse tranquiliser. Unconvinced by claims he committed suicide, she and James investigate, but a second death occurs and Agatha starts to receive threatening letters
Tuesday 5th July, 9pm, Sky1

Series two. The squad are called out to the scene of an unfolding tragedy as the drama following the officers of Montreal’s District 19 returns for a new series. Reports are received of an armed student on a shooting spree at a city high school. It soon becomes clear that some of the officers are better equipped to handle the situation than others. Tyler does not give a great account of himself, while Legare’s efforts have mixed results. Nick and Ben eventually take the gunman down, but the loss of life has been extensive. Nick offers Ben what comfort he can, which only serves to compound the anguish that his partner feels over an unrelated matter.

News comes in that a car bomb has exploded outside Hank’s house and the team soon has a suspect – a man only recently released from prison and sent down by the sergeant.
Thursday 7th July, 9pm, 5USA

Alice changes her strategy in her manhunt, while Ben convinces a reluctant Margot and Reggie to turn the tables on their benefactor. The agency takes on the case of a missing child.

Alex, Shelby and Iris learn some surprising truths about Drew, Will and Caleb while investigating them for high-level security clearances.

7 Marcella
Former detective Marcella Backland is shocked to the core when her husband Jason leaves her unexpectedly, confessing he no longer loves her. Heartbroken, she returns to her job on the Met’s murder squad that she gave up 10 years before to have her second child, and decides to follow up on a hunch she had in a case involving a serial killer.

8 Endeavour
A baffling suicide, an anguished father searching for his missing daughter and the smash-and-grab robbery of medieval artefacts throw the detective in at the deep end as he resumes his role with Oxford City Police following a four-month absence from duty. As the locals go to the polls in a closely fought by-election and a beauty contest builds to its conclusion, Endeavour must navigate the choppy waters of both worlds as his investigation shakes the highest pillars of Oxford society.

9 Vera
Series three. Young physiotherapist Lizzie Faulkner is shot dead while enjoying a holiday at a luxury country retreat. The resulting murder investigation unearths betrayal, guilt and the desire for atonement – as Vera moves quickly to avoid another tragedy, and Joe tries to make amends with the demons of his past.

10 A Touch Of Frost
Jack Frost investigates a woman’s near-fatal shooting. The victim was all set to testify against a notorious drugs baron accused of murdering one of his employees, but the appearance of a contract killer makes her think again – and it appears someone on Jack’s team is leaking information. Meanwhile, the station is turned upside down in the hunt for a missing lottery ticket.
