The Night Of, a curiously named eight-part series based on the BBC’s Criminal Justice series, is getting good reviews over in the US. It’s being broadcast on HBO – so there’s a stamp of quality, right there – and it’s coming over to the UK in September, via Sky Atlantic. Let’s take a look…
From creators Steven Zaillian (the man who wrote Schindler’s List) and Richard Price, The Night Of is an eight-part limited series that delves into the intricate story of a fictitious murder case in New York City. The series follows the police investigation and legal proceedings, all the while examining the criminal justice system and the purgatory of Rikers Island, where the accused awaits his trial.
British actor Riz Ahmed plays Nasir, a promising Pakistani-American student living in New York. His life turns upside down when he spends a heavy night with a ‘mysteriously intense woman’ he has just met. When he wakes up to find she has been stabbed to death, he becomes the number-one suspect. John Turturro (yep, JOHN TURTURRO) plays his lawyer, who aims to guide him through the prosecution and find a shred of hope in what seems to be an open-and-shut case.

Looks good to me.
