A little while ago, I put up a news story saying that Sky Atlantic’s latest HBO series – The Night Of, based on the BBC’s Criminal Justice – would be coming soon to the British digital TV network. Well, that has now been confirmed and that it would be premiering online first, in a Netflix-style boxset binge opportunity. Which sounds like a gameshow from the 1980s.
Just to recap, The Night Of is from Oscar–winning director Steven Zaillian and Oscar-nominated Richard Price, and portrays an intricate and harrowing story of a fictitious murder case set in New York City.
Starring John Turturro and Riz Ahmed, The Night Of explores the vagaries of a brutal murder case through multiple, contentious points of view. The eight-part series examines the initial police investigation, arrest, and imprisonment of the prime suspect – a likeable, unassuming Pakistani-American college student who finds himself and his family thrown into the pit of NYC’s criminal, legal, penal and judicial system. Meanwhile, his lawyer, an embattled defence attorney who is given the biggest case of his life, becomes entangled in a web of complicated legal manoeuvrings by detectives and rival attorneys that undermine his ability to try the case.
Every episode of The Night Of will be available on Sky Box Sets when the opening episode broadcasts on Sky Atlantic on 1st September.
