Any new Scandinavian or Nordic crime drama is greeted with much joy and fervour here in the UK, and Modus certainly has a fine pedigree to provide both – it’s based on the books by Norwegian best-seller Anne Holt, it stars The Bridge’s Melinda Kinnaman and Krister Henriksson, and, well, it’s Swedish. And it’s set at Christmas time. What more do you want? But the first two episodes, despite all its box-ticking, seemed to split viewers. I spoke to a number of people who really enjoyed it, while some readers of this site commented negatively. Me? I’m somewhere in between.

We’ve had a bit of a rush of transmission confirmations in the past few days. In the lead-up to Christmas, channels have been publishing their final lay-downs for the festive period, which means seasonal specials aplenty. In among them are a few crime dramas. We’ve had details for Agatha Christie’s The Witness For The Prosecution confirmed by the BBC, and also Grantchester by ITV. Here’s a thing: Grantchester, the cosy crime series based on the novels by James Runcie, has got its own Christmas special this year. That bastion of festive TV normally reserved for the likes of talent, comedy and cookery shows has now flung open its arms to include the crime drama. This one-off episode of the Robson Green and James Morton vehicle, set in bucolic, 1950s Cambridgeshire, now has a confirmed transmission date. Continue reading
