One of the crime dramas I’m most looking forward to in 2017 is the second series of Jane Campion’s Top Of The Lake. The first series was a strange, almost hallucinogenic story told in verdant Kiwi countryside; lakes shimmering, mountains encircling, forests enveloping, and eccentric folk doing strange things. It was a stunner. We know that for series two Elisabeth Moss returns as Robin, and Campion has managed to lure Nicole Kidman to the cast. Now we get our first look at the award-winning actress.
Kidman will play an Australian mother, Julia, who’s story will intersect Detective Robin Griffin (Moss).
Top of the Lake: China Girl (to give the second series its full name) begins four years on from the explosive ending of series one. Five years after the shocking events that rocked her hometown in New Zealand, Robin, recently returned to Sydney, is trying to rebuild her life. When the body of an Asian girl washes up on Bondi Beach, there appears little hope of finding the killer, until Robin realises “China Girl” didn’t die alone. Robin’s search to discover “China Girl’s” identity takes her into the city’s criminal underbelly and closer than she could have imagined to the secrets of her own heart.
Look out for it on BBC2 next year.
