Nicolas Winding Refn – the ‘maverick’ Danish movie director – is one of my favourite auteurs out there at the moment. He’s like a neon David Lynch – with movies like Drive, Only God Forgives and the recent The Neon Demon under his belt – his stories gorgeous, technicolour nightmare noirs. Now he’s reportedly signed on to make a new crime drama series for one of the big streaming services, in this case Amazon Prime.
Variety reports that Refn will make Too Old To Die Young, a 10-part series co-written with graphic artist Ed Brubaker.
Too Old To Die Young explores the criminal underbelly of Los Angeles. The series is described as being in a similar vein to Refn’s Pusher trilogy, which looked at Danish criminals caught up in the drug trade. It explores various characters’ existential journeys from being killers to becoming samurai’s in the city of angels.
Killers. Samurais. Los Angeles. Yikes!
With several big-name actors being eyed to star, it’s safe to say I’m salivating already.
More news as I get it.
