prime_suspect_1973_01ITV is having a busy-old day today. Not only has it revealed the transmission date – or at least confirmed – for series three of Broadchurch, it has also issued forth news of the transmission date for Prime Suspect 1973, the eagerly-awaited prequel to the landmark series, Prime Suspect. As with all these things, it’s about brand retention and giving what the fans want, but if Prime Suspect 1973 is anything like Endeavour has been this series, we’re in for a treat.

Ever since Lynda La Plante announced that she would be writing a prequel and that ITV had picked it up for a series (La Plante terminated her involvement half-way through the adaptation) anticipation has been high, not least because we wanted to know who was going to play the young Jane Tennison. That honour fell to Stefanie Martini, who herself had already appeared in Endeavour.Prime Suspect 1973 is set in Hackney in, you guessed it, the 1970s, and women police constables are being uneasily ‘integrated’ into the force. We’re introduced to 22-year-old Jane, a probationary officer in a world where high-ranking police officers were notoriously chauvinistic, and the rules and regulations often bent.

Single-minded and ambitious, if a touch naïve, Jane’s dedicated and instinctive approach to her career is evident from the start.  Starting as a WPC on the beat, she is thrown in at the deep end, drawn into a brutal murder enquiry, and experiences first hand London’s violent criminal ganglands. She works alongside senior investigating officer DCI Bradfield, and in her first murder case, sees the devastating effects violent crime has on the victim’s family, as well as experiencing tragic ramifications herself.

Here’s a trailer:

So, mark your cards for Thursday 2nd March, 9pm, ITV.
