And still they keep on coming. Just when you thought it was safe to turn on your TV sets again, another Scandinavian series is set to hit our shores, thanks to the partnership between Channel 4 and Walter Presents. Not that we’re complaining, of course, because… well, we all love a bit of Scandi Noir. This one – from Norway – sounds interesting, not least because the show’s lead, Anneke von der Lippe, won an International Emmy for her performance.
So what’s the craic with Eyewitness?
Two teenaged boys, Philip and Henning, (played by newcomers Axel Gehrken Boyum and Odin Waage) share an unexpected intimacy at a remote sand quarry in the Norwegian countryside. Their secret meeting is interrupted by a brutal multiple gang murder, which they both witness. Though they manage to escape, the killer has seen them. Haunted and hunted, they make a pact to never reveal what they’ve experienced. However, their secret, and the lies they tell to keep it, has spiralling repercussions for them and for their entire community. Further complicating matters, Local Chief of Police Helen Sikkeland (von der Lippe), who reluctantly heads up the murder investigation, is also Philip’s foster mother. Be prepared for a fast pace and twist that will chill you to your core.
Originally entitled Ǿyevitne and produced by Norway’s NRK, the six-part series was written and directed by Jarl Emsell Larsen. It became an instant hit in Norway and throughout Scandinavia and has been remade for USA Network and HBO Europe.
