One the shows we’re really excited about this year is the follow up to The People V OJ Simpson: American Crime Story. Ryan Murphy’s latest dramatisation of true events will focus on Hurricane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast of the United States in 2005, and its catastrophic aftermath. We knew it was going to appear on the US cable network FX later in the year, but now we know that it’ll be the BBC who broadcast it in the UK.
The 2005 hurricane was the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history and at least 1,245 people died in the storm and subsequent flooding – mostly because of the more than 50 breaches in New Orleans’ woefully inadequate hurricane surge protection. This horrific event was not only the reason why hundreds of people lost their lives, but also created a terrifying atmosphere of lawlessness. It also created an incredible city-wide spirit, in which the community came together to get through the ordeal and, subsequently, rebuild the city.
The new season boasts a star-studded cast including Annette Bening and Matthew Broderick.
According to Variety, Broderick ‘will play Michael Brown, the former head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency who was roundly criticised for the agency’s slow response to the devastation caused by the hurricane that hit the Gulf Coast in August 2005.’
