The 10 Best Crime Dramas This Week (Monday 8th – Sunday 14th January)

Honestly, where do you start with this week? THERE IS SO MUCH ON. Not only are series like Spiral, Craith and Hard Sun continuing, we have news offerings aplenty: Kiri (starring Sarah Lancashire and on Channel 4), the 583rd series of Silent Witness on BBC One, a new series of the ever-reliable Murdoch Mysteries on Alibi, new six-part thriller Next Of Kin on ITV, and something I didn’t have room to mention in the top 10, the second series of Lethal Weapon (Friday 12th January, 9pm, ITV). A special mention to The Tunnel, which finishes in emotional and devastating fashion, too. Enjoy!

  1. I’m watching ‘The Frozen Dead’ on Netflix. French police drama set in the Pyrenees. I like it so far 😊 The scenery is beautiful and very atmospheric, the main character (worn out middle aged cop) is good. I think the storyline may get a bit cliched, but it’s definitely worth a try. And it’s French! 😎

I only started watching this a year or so ago and I’ve now seen them all. I really liked Ben Miller and I warmed to Kris Marshall, but I can’t say I am keen on Ardal O’Hanlon at all so far. In a series that is, of course, not very credible (!) it seems odd to say he seems like a ‘silly’ character but there’s something about him that I can’t put my finger on. Maybe it’s just the acting, after all I think the previous two DCIs were quite cleverly played despite the stereotyping. Anyone else feel the same?

  3. Sara, I’ve always liked Ardal O’Hanlon, so I think he’s doing well, from what I’ve seen so far- equal parts serious and slightly idiosyncratic. Kris Marshall is good at doing the same, but in a different way. Marshall was so good in My Family that it was nice to see his serious side blended with a character that was a little off beat. I never saw Ben Miller and probably won’t get the chance now. Maybe I can stream it somehow. O’Hanlon does have a reputation for zany characters so it’s nice to see him in something different. I know some people don’t like Death In Paradise, but I like it- it reminds me a bit of the Agatha Christie type sleuthing. I love the theme music – it always makes me smile, and the locations are very lovely to look at.
