Luther series five begins filming; adds cast and plotlines revealed

When the news hit last year that Idris Elba would be back in Neil Cross’s Luther, the crime drama universe frothed at the mouth a little bit – it’s one of the highest-rating shows in the genre, and one of the BBC’s biggest exports. I still maintain that the new, fifth series will be broadcast this year, so it was heartening to see that Elba had donned the coat and had begun filming in London. Not only that, we get news about plotlines and new cast additions.

Dermot Crowley, Michael Smiley and Patrick Malahide will return for the four-part series as DSU Martin Schenk, Benny Silver and George Cornelius respectively, while BAFTA-winning actress Wunmi Mosaku will join as new recruit DS Catherine Halliday.

Idris Elba says:  “It’s good to be back in London, back in the coat.”

Neil Cross says: “We missed John Luther. We missed some old friends. And we wanted to make the biggest, scariest, darkest, most thrilling series of Luther there’s ever been. So that’s what we’ve come back to do.”

When the moonless shadows of London give birth to a new nightmare, DCI John Luther must once again confront the depths of human depravity.

As a series of monstrous killings becomes ever more audacious, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday are confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.

But even as the case brings him closer than ever to the nature of true evil, a reluctant Luther must also face the ghosts of his own past. Striding back into the line of fire, he must choose who to protect… and who to sacrifice.

Whatever his next move, it will have devastating consequences for those around him – and will change John Luther forever.

    1. P.s. metro.co.uk also claims that “While a fixed air date is yet to be revealed, we do know we can expect Luther in late 2018.” which is a piece of seriously good news, as well. Now we only have to wait for the date, and info whether or not Ruth Wilson will appear as Alice Morgan.
