Collateral arrives on BBC2 with considerable pedigree. The four-part series in conjunction with Netflix is written by noted playwright David Hare (Page Eight, Turks & Caicos) and comes packed with a veritable who’s who of film and TV talent including Carey Mulligan, John Simm, Nicola Walker and more, directed with understated style by S.J Clarkson (Defenders, Jessica Jones). All very impressive, and the story itself is of the ‘ripped from the headlines’ style beloved of the BBC, to the extent that they’ve put it up against ITV’s Trauma, aired at the same time (also starring John Simm). But is it actually any good?

On the face of it Trauma – this new, three-part ITV thriller – has an excellent pedigree both in front of and behind the camera: the two lead roles are taken by the ever-excellent John Simm and Adrian Lester, and the creator is Doctor Foster‘s Mike Bartlett. Whisper it, but Belgium has become a sneaky player in the crime drama landscape, thanks to a series of very solid shows. Salamander, Clan, Professor T, Code 37, Coppers and 13 Commandments have all been decent, and most have them aired on Channel 4’s foreign-language strand, Walter Presents.
