Finnish series Bullets wins Coup de Coeur award in Cannes

The sun is out here in London, which means it’s almost TV festival season in more reliably sunny places across the globe. We always have a keen eye on what’s new and what’s winning awards, because you never know: these series could one day appear here in the UK. Out in Cannes, a Finnish series has been getting some award-winning notices.

Bullets has won the Coup de Coeur award at the MipDrama Buyers in Cannes. Created by Bordertown’s co-screenwriter Antii Pesonen it impressed the judges with a 15-minute clip.

Nordisk Film Og TV Fond website says:

Krista Kosonen (PurgeThe Midwife) plays one of the two main roles together with German actress Sibel Kekilli (Game of Thrones, Head-On).

Kosonen plays the exceptionally gifted undercover cop Mari Saari who has infiltrated the inner circle of a suicide bomber recruiter Madina Taburova (Kekilli), nicknamed the ‘black widow’. Mari unwittingly forms a kinship with Madina and soon finds her duties as a cop and her drive to protect Madina at war with each other. But everything is not as it seems.

The series is expected to debut in its native country later this year, with international sales and distribution set to follow

    Thanks for the heads up, Paul. I haven’t seen much about this show in Finnish papers, as it is an Elisa original tv series (a Finnish mobile network service provider) that’ll be first showing on Elisa entertainment, then CMore, and finally on tv this autumn.

    The premise for the show sounds really interesting, and based on what I read about it I’m most definitely going to watch it. After doing some digging, I now know which character Sibel Kekilli played in GoT – she was Tyrion Lannister’s love interest Shae. Btw, Krista Kosonen made a short one-liner appearance also in Blade Runner 2049.

    P.s. the screenwriter’s name is Antti Pesonen.
