BBC releases first look at John Malkovich as Poirot; adds cast

Have a bit of this!

We can’t remember being as excited for a series in a while (OK, maybe since The Bridge, which isn’t that long ago to be fair), and much speculation has abounded as to what Sarah Phelps’ new incarnation of Hercule Poirot will look like. Will he have the ‘tache? Will that particular hirsute feature be as outlandish as Kenneth Branagh’s recent monstrosity?

The answer? No.

Here is John Malkovich as Hercule Poirot, in the Phelps’s forthcoming adaptation of The ABC Murders.

He looks like… well, John Malkovich.

Malkovich says: “I’m honoured to have been asked to play Hercule Poirot. It’s a role that’s been played by a number of excellent actors, and I am enjoying the numerous challenges this part presents. I have great respect for Sarah Phelps’ screenplay and hope to do both she and Agatha Christie’s creation some measure of justice.”

The producers have also revealed that 2018 Olivier Award-winning actress Shirley Henderson, Kevin McNally, Gregor Fisher and Jack Farthing will also join the previously announced all-star cast of Malkovich, Rupert Grint, Tara Fitzgerald and Andrew Buchan.

Also joining the cast in guest roles are Karen Westwood, Lizzy McInnerny, Anya Chalotra, Eve Austin, Christopher Villiers, Suzanne Packer, Michael Shaeffer, Cyril Nri, Henry Goodman, Tamzin Griffin, Ian Pirie, Shane Attwooll and Terenia Edwards.

This has Christmas or New Year written all over it, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed.

John Malkovich looks more like Vincent Van Gogh…

Sorry but this has already put me off the series. One of the key elements of Poirot is his appearance. In Christie’s book, Arthur Hastings describes him from the boutset as follows:

“He was hardly more than five feet four inches but carried himself with great dignity. His head was exactly the shape of an egg, and he always perched it a little on one side. His moustache was very stiff and military. Even if everything on his face was covered, the tips of moustache and the pink-tipped nose would be visible.”

I know we were spoiled by David Suchet’s immaculate portrayal but surely some of the most basic elements should be retained?

Looks like he just stepped out of Boardwalk Empire!

I like the look of John Malkovich as Poirot. Very impressive.

Malkovich looks more like an antagonist than a protagonist – more criminal than hero in this short clip. But perhaps his acting will do the trick to fill out the character. I agree a bit with Keith, but Sarah Phelps has always put her own stamp on Christie, so it’s not a huge surprise. Perhaps it was intentional, since we all have the image of David Suchet in our heads when it comes to Poirot. Bring it on!
