Eva Green to star in BBC Two adaptation of The Luminaries

French actress Eva Green is on her way back to UK TV screens.

Green plays Lydia Wells, while Hewson stars as Anna Wetherell and Csokas stars as Francis Carver in a BBC Two adaptation of Eleanor Catton’s 2013 Man Booker Prize-winning The Luminaries.

The period tale of adventure and mystery is set on the Wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island in the boom years of the 1860s gold rush. It’s billed as an epic story of love, murder and revenge, as men and women traveled across the world to make their fortunes.

It is 1866, and Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the New Zealand goldfields.  On arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of twelve local men, who have met in secret to discuss a series of unsolved crimes.  A wealthy man has vanished, a whore has tried to end her life, and an enormous fortune has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk.  Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely patterned as the night sky.

Elsewhere, defiant young adventurer Anna Wetherell, who has sailed from Britain to New Zealand to begin a new life. There she meets the radiant Emery Staines, an encounter that triggers a strange kind of magic that neither can explain. As they fall in love, driven together and apart by fateful coincidence, these star-crossed lovers begin to wonder: do we make our fortunes, or do our fortunes make us?

Sounds like a winner to us.

  1. Reblogged this on The Geek Astronaut and commented:
Eva Green in a historical piece is an instant watch for me, and I don’t even care who’s directing or writing the script. This woman is so good at acting (and so beautiful). I really miss her since Penny Dreadful ended, as I didn’t watch her movies.
Unfortunately, the filming only begins later this year, so I guess I’ll be anxiously waiting for it for quite some time.

  2. What do they mean Green plays Lydia Wells? I pictured Anna exactly like Green. They probably have not read that book.
