NYPD Blue sequel in the works

The late Steven Bochco’s NYPD Blue was a hugely popular staple of the 1990s, following as it did the lives of cops in New York’s 15th Precinct.

Now we hear that a sequel is in the works at home US network, ABC, which will revolve around the son of Dennis Franz’s Detective Andy Sipowicz character from the original series.

Deadline reports:

The reboot hails from NYPD Blue alums Matt OlmsteadNick Wootton and Jesse Bochco. The pilot, a co-production between 20th Century Fox TV, which was behind the original series, and ABC Studios, is already casting its four main roles of NYPD cops

Unfortunately for all Andy Sipowitz fans, in the sequel his character is dead. The return of NYPD Blue follows his son, Theo, as he tries to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father’s murder. Theo seems to have taken after his father as he too is a hard-drinking, hard-headed and quick-witted cop.

More news as we get it.

  1. Andy Sipowitz was murdered? I’d like to have thought of him growing older and grumpier. What a great character he was. I haven’t finished watch the original, but recorded the last two seasons onto DVD. I must schedule one time to watch them,
Anyway, I’d definitely watch this sequel.

  2. No No No. NYPD Blue remains my favourite television show ever. Everything about it was outstanding from the casting to the writing to the soundtrack. Please leave it as the work of perfection it is and don’t sully it with a vacuous spinoff that will go the way of so many of these new reboots. And NYPD Blue without Andy Sipowicz? Really? That would be like Hill Street Blues without Frank Furillo or Miami Vice without Sonny Crockett.

  3. Now this sequel is right up my alley! If only they would make one of Hill Street Blues, as well. Although it would not be the same without the original cast, Bruce Weitz as Belker, Charles Haid as Renko…

  4. Apparently the pilot didn’t meet the high bar set by the original and the cast have been released. But it may be reworked for another go at it….
