Series three of Bordertown now filming in Finland

What’s been great about the recent influx of Scandinavian and Nordic crime dramas is that Finland has also been getting in on the act.

We loved Deadwind (Karppi) and we also love Bordertown (Sorjonen), too. Broadcast on YLE in its native Finland and around the world on, you guessed it, Netflix, the series tells the story of Detective Inspector Kari Sorjonen (the brilliant Ville Virtanen) who takes a new job leading SECRI, the Serious Crime Unit in Lappeenranta, after his wife survives brain cancer. He moves his family to the town near the border of Russia for a more peaceful life. Yeah, right.

Series three is now in production, with the good news that is set to reprise his role as Sorjonen, alongside Olivia Ainali as his on-screen daughter Janina Sorjonen, Matleena Kuusniemi as his wife Pauliina and Anu Sinisalo as Detective Lena Jaakkola. Creator Miikko Oikkonen says: “the winter landscape and atmosphere of season three will bring the crimes and family drama to a new epic dimension.”

It’s set to premiere on YLE in October, so we wait in the UK with bated breath.

Stacy, I believe/hope Sorjonen/Bordertown 2 will be available on Netflix International in March *fingers crossed* as was s1 a few years back. Both s1 and s2 have been sold to Netflix so it will come. Here’s the trailer for s2 with English subs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnCjhSTf5Qw I’ve seen the trailer for s3 (in Finnish) and it’s looking awesome, too! As trailers come, I think it surpasses the trailer for s2.

Paul, I figured as much – how silly of YLE, they should be more alert and active with these trailers IMHO. The Danes and the Swedes always post their trailers for domestic shows with English subs on YouTube the first day the trailers come out in their countries. Much to learn about agressive selling for us Finns ;) Oh well, I tried. I guess the trailer for s3 with Eng subs will pop up eventually.

Stacy, let’s see if my uneducated guess will be true. I do hope you realise that it’s not official by any means, as nothing has been confirmed by Netflix?

Ok, now I know. Found a suitable explanation online: (British informal) a name or title of respect for a father, employer, etc. so I did use it correctly :D

Can’t wait for season 3 of Bordertown. And waiting for Deadwind season 2 to go in production. I am a true fan of all these shows coming from Finland, even though I don’t speak the language & need to have English translation for the actors. BRAVO!

Now it’s true, Sorjonen/Bordertown 3 will officially start on Finland’s Yle Areena (iplay type of service) on 29 November, and on YLE1 on 1 December. S3 will include five separate, 1- to 3-part stories/10 episodes in total (story 1: The Human Stain, story 2: The Human Beast, story 3: Sons and Lovers, story 4: The Woman in the Mirror, and story 5: A Chess Story – my own translations for the stories). https://areena.yle.fi/1-3677300

And yes, s3 will be the last one for the series. Hopefully on Netflix in Feb/March ’20?

Paul, do you think Sorjonon is supposed to be autistic? Some reviews say he is gifted as a way of explaining his quirks, but his odd hand movements and his posture make me think autism. We see (in season 3) that as a child he wore earmuffs to block out sounds, too.

    Just curious.
