Netflix ‘developing’ Chinatown origin series

Ask a decent sample size of what the best crime movie of all time is, and many people will say Chinatown.

The movie, which was originally released in 1974, memorably starred Jack Nicholson as private investigator  Jake Gittes and Faye Dunaway, directed by Roman Polanski.

Now we’re hearing that Netflix is developing an origin series, which will tell stories of a Jake Gittes during his early days as a private investigator.

Deadline reports that David Fincher (who has been involved in Mindhunter) and Robert Towne, the film’s infamous, Oscar-winning writer, are attached to pen the script.

To say this is exciting news is an understatement. Who will play Gittes? What will it be like?

Of course, this isn’t the only high-profile crime origin story in the pipeline.

HBO will be releasing a rebooted Perry Mason series – starring Matthew Rhys – next year.
