Mindhunter: Could it be back for series three?
Mindhunter fans were up in arms when it was announced the series two of the excellent serial killer drama would likely be the last.
But now reports claim that showrunner David Fincher and Netflix are in talks to bring the series back for a third run.
In 2020, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv were released from their contracts and the streaming giant put the show on “indefinite hold”.
Gamesrader reports: “However, a lot has changed since then, like series creator Fincher signing an exclusive four-year development deal with Netflix.
“His period drama Mank, released by Netflix, received positive reviews from critics and has been nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. All the more reason for both Netflix and Fincher to be interested in bringing the director back for his psychological thriller. “
More news as we get it…

Mindhunter: David Fincher confirms series ‘probably’ won’t happen
The future of one of our favourite recent series – serial killer drama Mindhunter – has been up in the air ever since series two finished last year.
The winner of 2017 Killing Times Crime Drama of the Year, it looked as though it was done after two series.
And now David Fincher seems to have confirmed that this could be the last we see of it.
He told Vulture: “We started getting scripts for the second season, and I ended up looking at what was written and deciding I didn’t like any of it. So we tossed it and started over. But it’s a 90-hour workweek. It absorbs everything in your life.
“When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.’ […] Mindhunter was a lot for me.”
When asked about the future and whether this was the end, he said: “I think probably. Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show.
“I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs.”

Mindhunter put on ‘indefinite hold’ by Netflix, cast released from contracts
During its two series, Netflix show Mindhunter has attracted an army of fans thanks to its slow-burning, intricate study of serial killers.
But now news reaches us that the series has been put on ‘indefinite hold’ and that cast members have been released from their contracts. Showrunner David Fincher is said to be concentrating on other projects before he revisits the show.
TV Line reports: “David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots. He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”
Despite this bad news, the report also stated that the show has not been cancelled.
It just looks as though we’re going to have to wait for a third run.

Netflix confirms Mindhunter 2 transmission date
Mindhunter was our favourite crime series in 2017.
We’ve known for a while that it was on its way back this year, and now we know when.
Digital Spy reports that series producer David Fincher spilled the beans during a podcast.
Netflix, on its official Twitter feed, then confirmed the information.
Set in 1977 – in the early days of criminal psychology and criminal profiling at the Federal Bureau of Investigation –Mindhunter revolves around FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), along with psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), who originate the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit within the Training Division at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. They interview imprisoned serial killers in order to understand how they think, with the hope of applying this knowledge to solve ongoing cases.
Series two is said to pick up between 1979 and 1981, two years after the events of season one, and focus on the Atlanta child murders, which were a series of at least 28 killings of African-American children, teenagers and adults.

Charles Manson to feature in series two of Mindhunter
Even though 2018 has proved to be a busy year full of quality crime drama – it really has been a decent year – 2019 could be even better. One of the series we’re keeping a close eye on is series two of Netflix’s Mindhunter (series one won our Best Crime Drama Of The Year in 2017).
We know that the Atlanta child murders will form the main focus of the series, but during the past month, we news has been released that details some of the other serial killers that will be featured.
It’s quite the list.
The Independent says:
The most recognisable name is Charles Manson, the famous cult leader who will also make an appearance in Quentin Tarantino’s next movie. Tex Watson, who led a group of Manson followers to kill multiple Hollywood persons including Sharon Tate, will also make an appearance.
Other criminals include Elmer Wayne Henley (who is serving six consecutive life sentences for participating in the Houston Mass Murders), David Berkowitz (better known as the ‘Son of Sam’), William Pierce, Jr., William Henry Hance (‘The Stocking Strangler’), and Paul Bateson (a serial killer who targetted gay men and had a small role in The Exorcist).
Fincher previously has previously teased that the upcoming series will focus on the real-life murders of African-American children committed in Atlanta between the years of 1979-81. This is in keeping with the time period considering the first run was set in 1977. The series will likely profile Wayne Williams who was jailed for just two of the murders.
Charles Manson, who died in late 2017, is du jour at the moment – as The Independent mentioned, he’s the focus of Quentin Tarantino’s next film, and a spate of true-crime documentaries have recently released detailing the 1960s serial killer’s cult.
Interestingly, Australian actor David Herriman has been cast as Manson in Mindhunter series two, and has also been cast as the US criminal and cult leader in Tarantino’s film.
That’s a pretty extraordinary double job Herriman has.
