The Sinner: Series four cast and plotlines announced

The anthology series, The Sinner, is on its way back.

Broadcast on USA Network in the US and Netflix in the UK, we have some cast news and some plotlines.

Series three sees a retired Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) still reeling from events in series three.

He travels to Hanover Island in Northern Maine for a recuperative getaway with his partner, Sonya (Jessica Hecht). When an unexpected tragedy occurs involving the daughter of a prominent island family, Ambrose is recruited to help the investigation, only to be thrown into a mystery of mounting paranoia that will turn this sleepy tourist island, and Ambrose’s life, upside down.

The Flight Attendant’s Cindy Cheung will play Stephanie Lam. Like the island matriarch Meg Muldoon (Frances Fisher), Stephanie will do anything to protect her son who becomes embroiled in a local mystery.

Ronin Wong will portray Mike Lam. Alongside his wife Stephanie, Mike runs a local restaurant. Although Hanover Island has been his home of many years, in times of crisis, Mike is made to feel like an outsider by long-time residents.

David Huynh will play CJ LAM, son of Mike and Stephanie. He is caught between supporting his parents in their businesses on Hanover Island and his longing to establish his own life on the mainland.

Neil Huff (Mare Of Easttown) is Sean Muldoon, a dutiful lobsterman with a sensitive soul, Sean works for his family’s business.

More news as we get it.

The Sinner renewed for a fourth series

We’ll be bringing you a review of series three of The Sinner in the coming days, but until then fans of the show will bouyed by the news that the show’s US home channel, USA Network, has renewed it for a fourth series.

The anthology series features Bill Pullman as Detective Harry Ambrose, who investigates seemingly open-and-shut cases. But the more he delves into them, the more nothing is as it seems.

The Sinner has struck a chord with audiences with its signature ‘whydunit’ style,” said Chris McCumber, president of USA Network and Syfy, in a statement.

“In season four, we’re excited to dig even deeper into the psyche of Bill Pullman’s beloved Detective Ambrose character, while introducing our audience to a compelling, completely new mystery.”

In series three – which has now premiered on Netflix – Ambrose is called to a car crash that initially seems like an open-and-shut case; the driver is pronounced dead on the scene and the surviving passenger claims it was a terrible accident. But after questioning a witness, Ambrose soon learns that there is much more to this story than meets the eye and begins unravelling what really happened that fateful day and why.

BBC Four confirms transmission date for series two of The Sinner

For those who haven’t watched The Sinner on Netflix, BBC Four has been giving the US series an airing.

It brought the second-run rights for series one last year, and it has bought the second-run rights for series two.

And now when it will start.

The Sinner is an anthology series based on the novel by Petra Hammesfahr. The first series told the story a young mother who, overcome by an inexplicable fit of rage, commits a startling and very public act of violence – and to her horror has no idea why. Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) finds himself obsessed with uncovering the woman’s buried motive.

In series two, Ambrose is lured back to his hometown in rural New York to assess an unsettling and heart-wrenching crime – parents murdered by their 11-year-old son, with no apparent motive. As Ambrose realizes there’s nothing ordinary about the boy or where he came from, the investigation pulls him into the hidden darkness of his hometown. He’s pitted against those who’ll stop at nothing to protect its secrets – including the mysterious Vera, a complicated, enigmatic piece to this haunting puzzle.

The Sinner (Series 2): Saturday 23rd November, 9pm, BBC Four

The Sinner releases first trailer for series three

USA Network’s The Sinner has become one of the better crime anthology series out there.

The show, which has aired globally on Netflix, has now released its first teaser trailer.

In the first series, Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Ambrose) delved into the past of a troubled young mother, in order to determine why she fatally stabbed a man during a beach outing but has no memory of why she committed the crime.

Series two saw Ambrose return to his hometown of Keller, Upstate New York, to help investigate a double murder with Heather Novack, an old acquaintance’s daughter who has just made detective. A couple were found dead, apparently poisoned, in a motel room. Carrie Coon was the series’ main guest star.

The third season follows Ambrose as he begins a routine investigation of a tragic car accident on the outskirts of Dorchester, in upstate New York. Ambrose uncovers a hidden crime that pulls him into the most dangerous and disturbing case of his career.

Matt Bomer will play Jamie, an upstanding Dorchester resident and expectant father who looks to Ambrose for support in the wake of an accident.

The key revelation is that this will be back early next year, not at the back end of this year as first expected.

The Sinner renewed for a third series

The first two series of USA Networks’ The Sinner (shown on Netflix and BBC Four in the UK and across the world) have been very close to being classics. The anthology series stars Bill Pullman as a troubled detective, and in the first series we had Jessica Biel stabbing someone seemingly out of the blue, and then, in series two, it was the turn of Carrie Coon to portray an ambiguous cult leader.

It’s nothing if not intriguing.

Now we’re hearing that the series has been renewed for a third run.

The Hollywood Reporter says that…

Pullman will return to reprise his role as Detective Harry Ambrose in the third season, which follows the character as he investigates a car crash and uncovers a crime that pulls him into the most dangerous and disturbing case of his career. [Matt] Bomer, currently starring on DC Universe’s Doom Patrol and earning Emmy buzz for his season-long guest role on NBC’s Will and Grace, will portray the series regular role of Jamie, a Dorchester resident and expectant father who looks to Ambrose for support in the wake of an accident.

There’s no word on when this third series will appear, but we’re betting it’s next year.

Here’s the trailer:

It’s going to be shown in double bills for four weeks. Hmm, we wonder what will air after that on our favourite, Saturday-night slot?
