Sky Atlantic confirms transmission date for Sharp Objects

July is shaping up to be a big month when it comes to crime drama. As soon as the World Cup finishes we’re expecting the likes of Unforgotten (series three) and Dark Heart to appear sometime on ITV, but over on Sky Atlantic we’re counting down the days until the adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects.

Based on the book of the same name by Flynn and directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Big Little Lies), this eight-episode series tells the story of Camille (Amy Adams), an alcoholic St Louis newspaper reporter with a history of psychological problems. When she’s sent back to her rural hometown to cover a string of unsolved child murders, her troubled past clashes with some shocking revelations, as she comes to identify with the victims all too much.

Suffice to say, we can’t wait. And the big news is that we won’t have to wait much longer.

Here’s a trailer…

HBO releases first trailer for Sharp Objects

HBO’s Sharp Objects is shaping up to be one of the crime drama events of the year.

Starring Oscar-winner Amy Adams, it’s based on Gillian Flynn’s (excellent) novel of the same name.

News and plot reveals have been drip-fed over the past month or so, but with an 8th July (US) transmission date, with a UK date hot on its heels, we now have a proper trailer.

Here it is:

Sharp Objects tells the tale of journalist Camille Preaker, who, fresh from a brief stay at a psychiatric hospital, faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now installed in her old bedroom in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims – a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story, and survive this homecoming.

HBO names transmission date for Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects

Last month, HBO released the first trailer for its Gillian Flynn adaptation, Sharp Objects.

Starring the brilliant Amy Adams, it’s a much-anticipated tale of journalist Camille Preaker, who, fresh from a brief stay at a psychiatric hospital, faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.

Here’s that trailer again:

We’ve always been told that the series is due in the summer, but now we know exactly when it will start, at least in the US. Here’s the fancy social media post confirming its transmission date:

Due to be broadcast on Sky Atlantic in the UK, we’re guessing it will air either on Sunday 9th or Monday 10th July.

More news when we get it, buut make no mistake – if this adaptation is half as good as the book, it’ll be a must-watch.

HBO releases first trailer for Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects

Two-thousand-and-eighteen is shaping up to be quite a year for crime drama. Not only have we had some returning big hitters like Spiral and the imminent The Bridge, the new stuff has been pretty impressive, too. The next really big one to look out for is an adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects – the excellent novel the preceded her break-out hit, Gone Girl. Now there’s a trailer – the first – that not only sets the scene but also reveals the month of transmission. Continue reading HBO releases first trailer for Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects

Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects picked up by HBO

sobjectsEver since Gillian Flynn hit big with Gone Girl, anything attached to her name has been (rightly) coveted. Since the global success of the aforementioned best-seller, Flynn has worked with director David Fincher on bringing Gone Girl to the big screen as well as a cancelled-before-transmission project to bring Channel 4’s Utopia to an HBO audience. But that experience hasn’t deterred the subscription cable broadcaster from working with Flynn – or her material – again. Continue reading Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects picked up by HBO

Gillian Flynn and David Fincher to adapt Channel 4’s Utopia for HBO

xxx-flynn--jy8481-3_4One of crime fiction’s biggest hits over the past year or so has been Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl – the tale of a dysfunctional married couple, the disappearance of a wife and a husband’s frantic search for her. Because it’s been so successful it’s easy to downplay the brilliance of the book – because success = no cool, right? – but the novel was terrific and beautifully plotted. Now one of the genre’s leading lights, Flynn’s next project (apart from sorting out her own movie adaptation of Gone Girl) is to adapt a British thriller for celebrated US cable network, HBO.
