REVIEW Rig 45: Murder At Sea (S1 E1/6)

Rig 45 has been around for a while – since 2018, in fact. When this Danish series was first mooted there was a frisson of excitement. It boasted an intriguing concept and a great cast. So the fact that it has only now made it to the UK is a slight concern. Usually a show that’s been sitting on the shelf for a while is because it’s not that great, or because there’s a budget or contract consideration.

It’s safe to say that the alarm bells were ringing when I sat down to watch episode one.

So let’s get into it. Somewhere in the North Sea (I’m guessing it’s the North Sea) is an oil rig, populated by a crew that’s essentially locked in. A Finnish staff member is on a harness and up high, making repairs on one of the towers when she becomes disorientated and short of breath. A hitherto redoubtable and well-liked member of the team, Ritva eventually falls to her death despite the best efforts of her colleagues. A terrible accident.

Or was it?

Called out to investigate the accident is Andrea, sent by the rig owners to find out what happened and to see if they’re liable for any insurance money. In fact, insurance money is playing heavily on the crew when she arrives. Rig 45 follows a pattern we see in all locked-room mysteries – an investigator shows up and the people locked in are all suspicious. The uneasy atmosphere takes a turn when Andrea is attacked and knocked unconscious when she goes to inspect the contents of Ritva’s locker, but her attack is dismissed by some as fiction. She must have slipped and bumped her head.

And all of Andrea’s investigations of course take place in darkness – no lights are turned on at any point. And as she begins to find strange things and disturbing patterns of behaviour in the crew, there’s lots of whispering in corridors, scowls from some of the crew quite obviously being set-up as the bad guys (Douglas, in particular) and it’s quite obvious that there are secrets bubbling under the surface.

So far, so familiar. In fact, we saw many of these tropes in Vigil last year.

It has a great cast fill of familiar faces, that is not in doubt – Gary Lewis, Ciaran McMenamin, David Dencik, Christian Hillborg, and the brilliant Søren Malling, for instance. And they all mostly speak in English, occasionally switching to Swedish or Danish. Because of this cast, the action and plot are fine, just fine. It’s nicely executed, the beats are scattered on point, it all looks really good and you can’t go wrong with a locked-room mystery.

But it all seems a bit flat. The dialogue and script – written by Ola Norén – has that stilted feel of a story written by a non-English speaker. All fine, but strangely off-kilter and not quite right. It doesn’t flow.

All that being said, on first watch Rig 45 isn’t the high-profile disaster it could’ve been. Instead, it’s a watchable, tense and fun series that is perfect for a bit of Friday-night escapism.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Rig 45: Murder At Sea is on More4 and All4 in the UK

Walter Presents announces Rig 45: Murder At Sea

Walter Presents has acquired Swedish series Rig 45: Murder At Sea.

This series has been floating around for a few years now, but it finally makes it to the UK thanks to Walter.

Following a fatal accident on Rig 45, Benthos Oils send their damage regulator Andrea out to the rig to document the accident.

It’s Christmas and the rig is shut down for maintenance, only manned by a small skeleton crew consisting of seven people when Andrea arrives by helicopter. After arriving at the rig Andrea soon realises that this isn’t going to be a routine investigation. All of the crew members carry secrets and Andrea starts to suspect that it might not have been an accident after all.  Following a second accident, communications to mainland are cut by a suspected sabotage.

To make matters worse, a hurricane roars in making transportation to and from the rig impossible: Andrea is stuck on board with a killer. But who among them is it, and will she catch them before there are no crew left at all?

It’s got a great multi-national ensemble cast, too – Scottish actor Gary Lewis, Ciarán McMenamin, David Dencik, Lorcan Cranitch, the great Søren Malling, Natalie Gumede and Filip Berg.

It begins on 24th June on All4.

Series one of Rig 45 picked up the story two days before Christmas when Andrea is sent by Benthos Oil to investigate a fatal accident on a North Sea rig. Met by an inexplicable wall of silence from the crew, Andrea starts to suspect something is very wrong – and when a hurricane slams into Rig 45, cutting off all communications with the outside world, the crew find themselves battling both the elements and a shockingly devious killer.

In the second season, the tension and drama escalate when Petra Dahlberg returns to the oil rig. The action takes just months after the dramatic end of the first season, with a dead body floating ashore on the Scottish coast. The body is believed to belong to Petra’s brother Fredrik Dahlberg, who was murdered by some crew members from Rig 45, and now the police are starting to believe that Petra has spoken the truth.

Now we know that StarzPlay – accessed via Amazon Prime – will stream it here in the UK.

Rig 45 pick up two days before Christmas when Andrea is sent by Benthos Oil to investigate a fatal accident on a North Sea rig. Met by an inexplicable wall of silence from the crew, Andrea starts to suspect something is very wrong – and when a hurricane slams into Rig 45, cutting off all communications with the outside world, the crew find themselves battling both the elements and a shockingly devious killer.

It stars an international cast that includes Catherine Walker, Gary Lewis, Lisa Henni, and old favourite Søren Malling.

Here’s a trailer…

Look out for it from 22nd February.

Rig 45 biggest show on Nordic region’s Viaplay service

As ever, we like to keep a track of what’s happening across the Nordic territories because you never know when something might come to these shores.

One such show is Rig 45, co-created by Alexander Kantsjö (Jordskott), Ola Norén (Kontoret) and Roland Ulvenius. And it sounds like a really interesting single-location murder mystery, and one that is now the top-rating show on Nordic streaming service, Viaplay.

Irish actress Catherine Walker (Versailles) and Scottish actor Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot) lead the cast with Lisa Henni, Søren Malling (pictured), David Dencik and Jakob Oftebro.

So what’s it all about?

One crew – one killer. Andrea (Catherine Walker), a damage regulator from Benthos Oil, is sent out to Rig 45 two days before Christmas to investigate a fatal accident. When starting to investigate, Andrea finds that the crew of the rig is unwilling to talk to her and she has a hard time finding out the truth. Just when the rig is hit by a hurricane and all forms of communication to the mainland is cut off, the crew realize that the accident is in fact a murder, and they now know that they are in real danger. With a murderer amongst them, questions are being asked – who is the killer?

Although Viaplay itself has commissioned this, ITV Studios has a hand in this, so let’s hope it comes to the UK.
