It’s another big week down in the dark alley way of crime drama on TV. We have one of the country’s major crime dramas returning – series three of Line Of Duty – and the excellent and serpentine Thirteen comes to an end on BBC3 at the end of the week (although if you’re watching along on BBC2, you’ll be reaching episode four). There’s also a brand new radio drama, Hollywood Endings, starring Kathleen Turner to look out for. Continue reading The 10 Best New Crime Dramas This Week (Monday 21st – Sunday 27th March)

And so this week – next Saturday – we bid farewell to Trapped, the superb Icelandic crime drama that has captured so many people’s imaginations. It has been truly fantastic. But there’s need to weep too convulsively – there’s still a lot on to enjoy. There’s a sensational, fifth episode of Happy Valley, more tension in Thirteen and a flashy, twist-turny new US series called Quantico over on Alibi. Review: Stan Lee’s Lucky Man (S1 E3/10), Friday 5th February, Sky1

Stan_Lee_s_Lucky_ManTwo episodes into this supernatural crime procedural and Harry Clayton (James Nesbitt) is starting to feel the weight of the bangle, both physically and mentally. Although it gives him untold luck, it also puts him into some tricky situations – his partners die and he’s seemingly a suspect in every murder case because his new lucky intuition puts him at the scene of the crime every single time. If that’s a better life, give me something different. Should’ve gone to Ratners, Harry.

*NB. Key plot points are discussed ahead. There be major spoilers. Continue reading Review: Stan Lee’s Lucky Man (S1 E3/10), Friday 5th February, Sky1

The 10 Best Crime Dramas This Week (Monday 1st February – Sunday 7th February)

Dark_RoadThis week in crime drama land it’s very much as you were, with plenty of brand new episodes from the host of continuing series that are doing the rounds at the moment. One thing worth mentioning – it’s the final episode of The Young Montalbano this coming week, which means that prestige 9pm slot will be filled with something new on the 13th February. Could it be Hinterland? Or could it be Trapped? In fact, next week is a biggie (Happy Valley, anyone?). Review: Stan Lee’s Lucky Man (S1 E2/10), Friday 29th January, Sky1

lucky_man_2Here we go then for the second episode of Stan Lee’s less than superhero/supernatural/supersomethingorother fantasy crime drama. Last week’s opener was patchy to say the least – its story of a gambling addicted copper being embroiled in a murder plot (fair enough) in a pristinely-photographed London consistently hamstrung by a daft subplot involving a bangle that gives its wearer unlimited luck (as well as some shocking dialogue and soundtrack work). But sticking with it I am, so I was interested to see how the story developed this week. Continue reading Review: Stan Lee’s Lucky Man (S1 E2/10), Friday 29th January, Sky1

The 10 Best Crime Dramas This Week (Monday 25th – Sunday 31st January)

Dark_RoadThere’s so much new crime drama on at the moment, it’s difficult to know where to start with things. Unfortunately, not all of the new crime drama is that good so viewer discretion is advised. However, two shows that you know that will deliver the goods are Vera and Murdoch Mysteries – both returning this week. Hurrah! Review: Stan Lee’s Lucky Man (S1 E1/10), Friday 22nd January, Sky1

luckycropWe’ve all seen that the seemingly never-ending ubiquity of the cinematic phenomenon of superhero movies cross over the into the TV landscape recently, most notably thanks to Netflix, who have hit two home runs with Daredevil and Jessica Jones (both Marvel adaptations). Each one of them has an element of crime and in the case of Jessica Jones it handled the superhero thing with so much sensitivity and gritty realism that you almost forgot it was part of the superhero genre. Even though something like a Jessica Jones would sit very well on this site, I’ve decided not to go down the superhero route (I mean, how much can we possibly watch and review?), but now Sky1 has got in on the action and teamed up with legendary, 93-year-old Marvel icon, Stan Lee, for a new 10-part series set in London. It’d be rude to not have look.

The 10 Best Crime Dramas This Week (Monday 18th – Sunday 24th January)

First_look_at_James_Nesbitt_in_Stan_Lee_s_Sky1_drama_Lucky_ManApologies. I’m in the glorious throes of moving house at the moment so this past week has been a bit quiet on the blog front. Normal service will be resumed this coming week. It’s still busy out there in crime drama land, with brand new episodes of series every single night of the week, and this insane amount is joined by Sky1’s Lucky Man this week – a series from the mind of comic book genius Stan Lee and starring James Nesbitt.
