ITV renews Grantchester for a fifth series

Grantchester, ITV’s cosy-crime period hit, is coming back for a fifth run.

Based on the novels by James Runcie, it’s set in the 1950s and follows an unlikely crime-fighting duo – Reverend Will Davenport and gruff, down-to-earth Police Inspector Geordie Keating.

Original series star James Norton exited the series as Sidney Chamber last series and was replaced by Tom Brittney as Reverend Will Davenport.

The show’s fifth season is set in 1957, the year Prime Minister Harold Macmillan told the British people that they had ‘never had it so good’. For many of the residents of Grantchester, it really will feel like they’re in a delightful new Eden, but for all the talk of paradise on earth and faith-in-action, Geordie Keating (Robson Green) knows that trouble is never far away.

ITV confirms series four of Grantchester

Grantchester, starring Robson Green and James Norton, and new cast member Tom Brittney, returns to ITV for a fourth series in the first week of January, in a month full of crime drama premieres.

The cosy-crime series, set in the titular, bucolic Cambridgeshire village, centres around a crime-solving vicar and his relationship with local copper, DI Geordie Keating.

James Norton, who plays the charismatic, jazz-loving clergyman, Sidney Chambers, will make his final appearance during the series. Clergyman Will Davenport, played by Tom Brittney, becomes Geordie’s new crime-solving partner in 1950s Grantchester.

A man of the people, confident, caring and self-assured, Grantchester’s young, new parish priest Will Davenport channels his boundless energy into a quest for social justice. He is a man of God, but with the devil inside of him. As Geordie draws him into righting the wrongs of criminal Cambridge, Will’s own troubled past is unearthed

James Norton, who plays the charismatic, jazz-loving clergyman, Sidney Chambers, will make his final appearance during this fourth series on ITV – a co-production from Kudos and MASTERPIECE on PBS.

On joining Grantchester, Tom Brittney said: “I am beyond excited. From the moment I heard about the role of Will Davenport, it was something I wanted more than anything. It’s a real honour to be joining such a wonderful series, with such a loyal fan base.”

James Norton said: “As excited as I am to be filming a new series of Grantchester, it’s also heartbreaking to be saying goodbye to Sidney Chambers. I’ve loved this experience, and particularly working with such an extraordinary cast and crew. All the best to the fantastic Tom Brittney in his role as the new vicar. He is a wonderful addition to the Grantchester family.”

ITV confirms transmission date for series three of Grantchester

Over three series, James Runcie’s Grantchester has become a bit of hole-filler – in recent years the cosy crime sub-genre has somewhat disappeared (although you could argue that Midsomer Murders and Death In Paradise are updated versions, and then there’s Endeavour… actually, scrap what I said about cosy crime) and Grantchester has filled things in nicely. It helps having some good acting talent to bring the seemingly innocuous tale of a vicar (James Norton) and a blunt copper (robson Green) doing the rounds in 1950s bucolic Cambridgeshire to life. Anyway, it’s back and series three is just around the corner. Continue reading ITV confirms transmission date for series three of Grantchester
