The 10 Best Crime Dramas This Week (Monday 21st – Sunday 27th November)

modusHold on to your thermals: at the end of this week much-anticipated Swedish crime drama, Modus, starts up on BBC4. Normal service is resumed, hurrah! Elsewhere, The Missing reaches its penultimate episode, Y Gwyll/Hinterland continues on S4C, and there’s a new radio drama on BBC Radio 4. Elsewhere, it’s slim pickings as a) I’m A Celebrity dominates, and b) we head into the Christmas period. Enjoy!

1 Modus *NEW UK PREMIERE SERIES*
A family wedding at Christmas is disrupted for psychologist and criminal profiler Inger Johanne Vik when her eldest daughter Stine unwittingly becomes a witness to a murder. With a killer out to get her, Stina’s only hope of survival seems to lie with her mother, who is drawn into a police investigation into a serious of brutal killings.

As their investigation deepens they uncover threats, blackmail and dark secrets. Hugo Speer plays Stone.

8 The 39 Steps
Rupert Penry-Jones stars in this adaptation of John Buchan’s classic novel, set in 1914. Engineer Richard Hannay is bored and restless in London – until he meets Scudder, who claims to be a British spy. When the agent is killed in his flat, Hannay is thrown headlong into adventure, forced to go on the run under suspicion of murder. Fleeing to Scotland, with police and spies on his tail, he teams up with feisty suffragette Victoria Sinclair, and although they fail to hit it off, the couple become increasingly reliant on each other as they race to unmask a traitor and save Great Britain from German invasion.

9 The Suspicions Of Mr Whicher
Series three. The return of the Victorian crime drama starring Paddy Considine. Whicher is hired by his one-time political master, former home secretary Edward Shore, to investigate threats made against his son Charles, who has recently returned to London from India with his young family. Shore fears entanglement in a scandal could have devastating repercussions for his career and insists the detective carry out the investigation without involving his former Met colleagues, even after a murder occurs. Whicher’s pursuit of justice takes him to the most dangerous corners of the Docklands, but also brings him into contact with a woman who starts to melt his long-frozen heart.

A man’s life changes forever on the night he meets his perfect double.   1. So, two Australian series and now a Swedish one in the foreign drama slot. That’s all well and good but when will BBC4 broadcast the next two installments of Danish Department Q? More Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares, please.
