Vienna Blood ‘recommissioned for fourth series’

Period crime drama Vienna Blood will be coming back for a fourth series, according to reports.

Televisual says that the show has been “recommissioned by ORF (Austria) and ZDF (Germany) for a fourth season special and acquired by the BBC and PBS”.

It has also provided a plot outline for the fourth series: It’s Vienna, 1909 and the double murder of an arms dealer in police custody and a senior public official has shaken Vienna to its core. Doctor Max Liebermann has only just returned from a tour of the U.S. when Inspector Rheinhardt asks for help in what could be the biggest case of their career. Oskar and Max discover a conspiracy that leads to the heart of the government. Can the Freudian psychiatrist and the detective do enough to stop a seditious mole known as ‘Mephisto’ from bringing the Austro-Hungarian Empire to destruction? And will their lives ever be the same again?

Matthew Beard and Juergen Maurer reprise their roles as crime-fighting duo Doctor Max Liebermann and Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt, and one story will be told over multiple episodes. Filming has begun in Austria.

  1. Really like this one, the leads are excellent and the production sumptuous. But I think I’d prefer 6 separate stories rather than one spread over 6 episodes.

  2. It’s an interesting twist on a crime drama. Beautiful Vienna is a treat to see in contrast to some gruesome crimes. We get just enough of the two protagonists’ personal lives to humanize them yet keep focus on the crimes. I’m in the US & am so glad PBS. Has expanded its line up with more foreign made features.
