Hold tight Vera fans: ITV has confirmed that seaosn 14 of the series starring Brenda Blethyn will be the last.
Brenda Blethyn has confirmed she has decided to hang up DCI Vera Stanhope’s infamous trench coat and hat following the filming the series this summer, which she’ll film alongside the cast, crew and production team she values as friends in her beloved Northumberland and North East.
Since filming began on Vera in 2011, inspired by the character created by bestselling author and Diamond Dagger award-winning writer Ann Cleeves, Brenda’s love, passion and appetite for the drama and the character of Vera has never faltered.
Blethyn said: “Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I’m sad to be saying cheerio. But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years. I’ll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role. The Producers, dream cast and crew have been fabulous and I’m going to miss them, but I won’t forget their huge talent, the camaraderie, laughter or kindness we shared nor the friendship of the people of the north east and our fans worldwide. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
The series will comprise two feature-length episodes. More news as we get it.

Very sad news indeed, especially following the changes to Shetland. Ann Cleeves has been such a consistent provider of top shelf British crime drama for so long, but I guess all good things must come to an end.
