REVIEW: Trigger Point (S2 E6/6)

So here we are then. If you’ve endured this series for as long as I have, you’ll be at least interested in how this all ends.

And, befitting a story that has been equal parts ridiculous as it has been just not great, this finale was on par with the rest of it.

As we saw last week, Lana had been abducted by The Wave, whose head honcho (the Nameless Welsh woman) set out her group’s requirement for its latest prisoner: they want Lana to carry a bomb into police HQ and get near enough to the visiting Home Secretary to kill everything and everyone. Because? They want to echo the student protests of 1968 and put enough pressure on the status quo to banish capitalism and all that jazz.

Lana, quite rightly, refuses but is told by the Nameless Welsh Woman (NWW) that they have rigged her parents’ house with explosives and won’t hesitate to push the button if she doesn’t comply with their request.

(As I mentioned in last week’s review, it felt like Lna’s mum and dad would be part of this finale and not in a happy way.)

Lana is basically on her own (Alex dies rather unpleasantly early in the episode), and is desperate to bide time or think of something to get out of this jam, because, of course, she agrees to carry out The Wave’s bidding.

And whatever happens next you’re like, ok this is sooooooo silly and daft and I can’t bring myself to watch this trash but I need to find what is going to happen.

In the end, Lana does survive and even though NWW is watching her every move thanks to having access to the security cameras inside HQ, she manages to get help from several colleagues, including Sonia (whose sole role in this series is to ask ‘you alright mate?’ to Lana) and Danny. Thankfully Lana saves the day in a very Jack Bauer sort of way, and everyone lives happily ever after and has a great time at Danny’s wedding. (I always wonder about these party scenes when everyone has to laugh and dance… is that tougher for actors?)

That was the end of the series, and I wonder if there’ll be another one. As I mentioned right at the start of the series, the problem here is that the bomb scenes are nicely done and provide maximum tension for the viewers but there isn’t a lot in between. Add to that in this series the fact the bad guys were staging ever more ridiculously outlandish stunts made even the bomb scene hard to take, which, previously, was the show’s strength.

You can also pint to the fact that a bomb disposal expert only has a small, but crucial, part in an investigation, which made Lana’s central placement at the heart of these investigations problematic.

Is there such a thing as bomb fatigue? If so I have it – there was so much bomb stuff in this series, I became desensitised and even immune to any tension these scenes produced.

Decent cast, and decently choreographed scenes that provided some thrills, but in the end, I lost any semblance of interest.

  1. A great review, Paul! Thank you. You are correct, we have had to endure this series, and if there is a s3, I won’t be watching. So many holes in the series and finale; they were sophisticated, but they left the phone in Alex’s pocket, Lana with a bomb, didn’t blindfold her so she knew where they were based, didn’t anticipate sniffer dogs. Just poor, poor writing, with few characters to care about (liked Helen and Sonia the best), little plot and by the end of it no tension. The best bits were your review and a podcast I have listened to about it. The show-meh.
